Nikon
D800 (body only)
36 megapixel professional DSLR
The D800 is a camera with the highest resolution currently available in a DSLR. Its full-frame, 36 megapixel sensor delivers results that are more detailed and nuanced than any other non-medium-format camera, making it an excellent choice for studio, fine art, and landscape photography.
It is commonly held that higher resolution sensors produce higher noise in their images. The D800 thoroughly upturns this idea, and delivers images that are at least on par with cameras with much lower megapixel counts. This low noise level, coupled with its 100-25,600 ISO range, makes the D800 a capable camera in low light. This is only reinforced by its 51 point autofocus sensor, which is sensitive to an incredible -2 EV. That autofocus sensor is the same as in Nikon's flagship D4, and offers 15 cross-type AF points and advanced 3d subject tracking.
Being a high-end DSLR, the D800 has a robust magnesium alloy build with extensive weather sealing, making it dust and moisture resistant. The viewfinder is a large and bright pentaprism with 100% coverage, and has an option to display composing grid lines and a two-axis level. From an ergonomics standpoint, the D800 has a large and comfortable grip, with all the major controls having dedicated buttons and being within reach.
Overall, this is a camera for photographers who need incredibly high resolutions and accurate colour rendition, or users who want a full-frame body with an advanced feature set.
