The Nikon F90X is a prosumer 35mm autofocus SLR introduced in 1992. It sits below the professional F4 in Nikon's lineup but borrows many of its core technologies, packaged in a more accessible body with a straightforward control layout. It was sold in some markets as the F90, and a slightly updated variant, the F90X.
The F90X covers the full range of exposure modes (PASM) and includes Nikon's 3D Matrix metering, which reads scene data from the lens and links it to the metering system for more accurate exposures across varied lighting. The shutter runs up to 1/8000s with flash sync at 1/250s, and the built-in motor drive handles film transport automatically and also offers continuous firing (up to 4.6fps). The viewfinder provides a solid information readout. Lens compatibility is broad: AI, AIS, AF, AF-D, AF-S, and G-series lenses all mount and meter correctly. The plastic AI coupling tab means Non-AI lenses cannot be mounted safely, and AF-P lenses will not autofocus. Otherwise, nearly the full range of F-mount glass works here.
The F90X is a great choice for film photographers who want modern metering, super fast shutter speeds, and wide lens compatibility without paying for a professional F-series body. It handles everyday shooting cleanly and holds up well as a working camera rather than a collector piece.
