The 50mm f/1.4 FE Mount Planar T* ZA lens from Sony is a normal-length prime lens designed for full-frame E-mount cameras. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 75mm equivalent focal length. With its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture it is well-suited to working in low lighting conditions and with shallow depth of field techniques.

The Zeiss Planar optical design features a 12-element in 9-group design to produce an almost distortion-free image. It uses one Advanced Aspherical, one aspherical, and one extra-low dispersion element to minimise spherical and chromatic aberrations. A Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to combat flare and ghosting for crisp, clear imagery.

Autofocus is fast, quiet, and precise, thanks to a ring drive Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM) system. An AF/MF switch is included for quick changing between the modes and an internal focus design maintains overall lens length during use. De-click the physical aperture ring on this lens with the simple flip of a switch, making it a great option for video as well as stills. A rounded eleven-blade circular diaphragm produces smooth out of focus 'bokeh' areas, and a dust and moisture-resistant construction provides peace of mind when working in changeable weather conditions.
