The HB-74 is a bayonet lens hood from Nikon, compatible with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens. By shading the end of the lens, it is designed primarily to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens. It is designed to match the angle of view of the lens it was designed for. Since the end of the lens is extended while the hood is in use, it also provides additional protection from accidental impacts to the lens's front element.
