Thanks to Its updated HyperSmooth 2.0 stabilisation, the Hero8 Black produces replicates the smooth, gimbal like movement at all supported frame rates, without the actual need for a gimbal! Other physical updates include a "folding fingers" type base for fast mounting and a redesigned battery door for more efficient battery changes. The Hero8 also boasts a lens featuring an impact resistance that is twice that of the Hero7.

The Hero8 Black supports up to UHD 4K video resolutions, time-lapse, slow motion, as well as super-slow-motion video. Its updated SuperPhoto can capture still images at up to 12MP resolution in bursts of up to 30 images per second. Improved HDR support for this still image function is provided to reduce blur and enhance details in dimmer conditions. The also updated Night Lapse function can shoot and process up to 4K time-lapses at night. The LiveBurts function affords more choices -- to be precise, 90 still images-- for you to choose the best frame by recording 1.5 seconds before and after a shot. Furthermore, there are now four lens field of view (FOV) modes available: Narrow, Linear at 24.4mm, Wide at 16.5mm, and SuperView at 15.1mm.

As with its predecessors, the Hero8 Black supports live streaming to Facebook Live, enabling instant sharing of any action. USB output port supports video transfer from your camera to your computer. Waterproof to about a depth of 10m, the camera ideal for use during a variety of water-related activities, including surfing, snorkelling, and swimming. While the touchscreen is easily and quickly navigated and managed, the offering of 15 voice commands available in more than 10 languages and accents enables opertation even when your hands are full.
