Wide-angle Zoom Lens

The FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Lens from Sony is a bright and versatile wide-angle zoom lens for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 18-36mm. This is combined with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture that is ideal for working in dimmer conditions and for using shallow depth of field techniques to isolate subject matter.

The advanced optical design uses three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED and three extra-low dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for impressive sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR Coating II has also been applied to individual elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting. This updated coating is developed to suit larger and curved elements better, and is especially adept at minimising internal reflections. Additionally, a floating design is also employed for maintaining consistent results throughout the focusing range, from 28cm to infinity.

This design is complimented by a XD Linear Motor autofocus system that employs four separate focusing motors to deliver quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance, benefitting both stills and video applications. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an integrated AF/MF is situated on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting. A dedicated focus hold button is also available for tactile control and rapid access to select settings. The lens is finished with a dust- and moisture-sealed design and rubberised control rings to aid working in colder temperatures. A built in petal-shaped lens hood aids in blocking stray light as well as provides some protection to the front element.
