The 24-70mm f/2.8 SP Di VC USD G2 lens from Tamron is a standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.6-112mm equivalent focal length range. This versatile focal length range is combined with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture to make the lens well-suited to working in difficult lighting situations, and an excellent choice for capturing a variety of subjects. This is also useful when working with shallow depth of field techniques, and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
The optical design features two XR (extra refractive) and three LD (low dispersion) elements to combat colour fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, colour, and edge-to-edge sharpness. This is complimented by three glass-molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element that work to further reduce aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range, and eBAND and BBAR coatings have also been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.
The lens uses a USM autofocus motor for fast, accurate, and near-silent focusing performance that benefits both stills and video shooting, and full-time manual focus control makes fine-tuned adjustments easy. Vibration Compensation is also included, and this works to provide a 5-stop-effective reduction in the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld imagery. Separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting. Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilised viewfinder image and stabilised results, while Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements.
The lens is finished with a moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element to protect against dust, dirt and smearing. It is also compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating the lens firmware.
