With its long reach and fast aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR from Nikon is a professional telephoto prime lens ideal for sports and wildlife photography. Designed for use with full-frame FX-format Nikon DSLRs, it is also compatible with DX-format cameras where it will provide a 600mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptional image quality is achieved with the use of three Extra-low Dispersion elements, Super Integrated lens coating and Nano Crystal Coating. Together they work to control chromatic aberration and reduce ghosting and flare, for sharp contrast-rich images. A 9 bladed aperture lets in plenty of light in dim conditions, and delivers pleasant background blur.
An internal focus system and Nikon's Silent Wave Motor ensure quick, quiet and accurate autofocus. An A/M mode allows for fast switching between auto and manual focus and manual focus override allows immediate control over precise focus with a turn of the focus ring. The lens features a minimum focusing distance of 2.9 metres and focus memory recall function is also supported.
All this is complimented by Nikon's Vibration Reduction image stabilisation system to reduce the blur caused by camera shake. This makes it possible to shoot at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise be possible. Tripod Detection mode is also available and works to reduce the vibration that may occur due to the shutter release when mounted on a tripod.
The lens is finished with a robust magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing to withstand use in harsh environments. A wide rubberised focus ring, rotatable tripod collar, drop-in filter holder, two-piece lens hood and hard trunk case are also included and complete this impressive lens.
