Leica

R7 (including motordrive with handgrip)

35mm Film SLR Camera

The R7 is a 35mm film SLR camera made by Leica. Though similar to the Leica R5, it offers a variety of more up-to-date features including electro-mechanical and auto-exposure and program modes.

The R7 features a fully automated TTL flash mode with a 1/100 sec sync time. In combination with a compatible flash unit fill flash is available with shutter-priority exposure mode, and the system will switch automatically between fill flash and full flash in Program mode. Other improvements include increased exposure meter sensitivity DX coding with manual setting beyond DX limits and automatic battery check display in the viewfinder.

The viewfinder uses an eye-level, non-interchangeable prism, and a viewscreen that can be changed if desired. The viewfinder covers 92% of the image area and +/- 2 diopter adjustment is also available. The standard viewscreen has a coarse central microprism area with a central split-image focusing aid. The remainder of the screen consists of a matte focusing area. Viewing is at full aperture, with DOF preview. There are in-viewfinder displays for aperture, shutter speed, meter diodes, and meter pattern. There is also an eyepiece shutter that blocks stray light entering through the eyepiece, if you move your eye away from the viewfinder. This means the camera's metering is not affected by stray light.

The R7 offers both selective and integral metering modes, and switching between these is easy thanks to a switch located beneath the shutter-release dial. Metering is achieved through a photodiode placed in the camera base. The metering sensitivity ranges from EV 0 to EV 20 in integral mode, and EV 2 to EV 20 in selective mode. Full-field integral metering covers the entire view without any weighting of particular areas, while selective metering measures the incoming light only for the area that is indicated by the outer frame of the focusing circle, which has a diameter of 7mm. The metering choices are linked to the camera mode chosen. Integral metering is available in A, T, and P mode, and selective metering in A and M mode.

The camera has an electronically-timed, vertical-travel, metal shutter mechanism. The latter offers speeds from 4 seconds to 1/2000s in half-stop intervals in m and T modes, and continuously-variable speeds from 16 seconds to 1/2000 sec. in A and P modes. There is also a bulb mode ("B") for longer time exposures, and it is possible to lock-up the mirror, avoiding image blur from mirror slap during longer exposures. The feature is activated by threading the optional Mirror Lock-up Release R (Leica code 14087) into a small socket next to the lens mount.

The R7 takes four 1.5 volt batteries. If battery power is low, a "BC" symbol for "battery check" is displayed in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. If the batteries are completely flat, the camera can still function, but the shutter speed is limited to 1/100s or "B" (bulb).

The R7 is available here with a motor drive for selectable 2fps or 4fps. It does not offer film rewind or an end of film sensor. Leica recommended using only 36 exposure rolls as the camera will stop at exposure 36, preventing film tear out.
