The Nikon D810A (Astro) DSLR Camera is a modified version of the D810 featuring an optical IR cut filter, designed for photographing the night sky. With this dedicated filter to pass H-alpha (656.28nm) wavelengths, the D810A avoids infrared contamination. It also features an expanded shutter speed range and M* exposure mode for more accurate exposure times up to 15 minutes, as well as a Virtual Live View Exposure Preview feature for clear focus and composition confirmation when making long exposures.
Beyond these few but notable distinctions, the D810A and D810 feature the same set of core features. The D810A features a 36.3MP FX-format CMOS sensor that omits the traditional Optical Low Pass Filter to produce exceptionally sharp and detailed still images. It uses an EXPEED 4 Image Processor for up to 30% faster performance speeds than with the EXPEED 3, and reduces noise throughout the ISO range, with an upgraded ISO sensitivity range from 64 to 12,800 which can be expanded from 32 to 51,200.
As a camera optimised for video capture, the D810A features recording in both FX and DX formats including simultaneous recording to memory cards and an external recorder as well as recording 60p output to an external recorder. Two card slots are supported for versatile image storage and smoother workflow; one CF card slot for high-speed UDMA 7 cards, and one SD card slot for high-speed, high-capacity SDXC and UHS-I cards. A 5fps continuous shooting speed is achievable in FX format and 7fps in DX format when utilising the optional MB-D12 battery grip with AA batteries, and the improved efficiency of the processor allows you to take up to 1200 shots on one full battery charge and 40 minutes of video recording.
The full HD video capabilities have also been upgraded to include 1080p at 24, 30 and 60fps. The ISO range for video has been expanded to run from ISO 64 to 12,800 and expand to 51,200. Automatic ISO adjustment in manual mode enables smooth exposure transitions. Audio can be recorded via the built-in stereo microphone or via an optional external microphone and headphones, and a selectable audio frequency range provides exacting control over sound recording.
The D810A also features the advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX autofocus sensor which is the same sensor from the D4s. This sensor offers 51 AF points with 15 cross-type focus points and Group Area AF mode enables five AF points to be used as one group, which makes it easier to track and focus on fast moving subjects. Interval and time-lapse shooting feature exposure smoothing, and the maximum number of images per sequence is now 9,999.
Compose your images using the 3.2" LCD with 1,229K-dot resolution or optical viewfinder. The LCD provides playback viewing and live view, and improved coatings on the optical viewfinder components ensure brighter images and more accurate colours. Live View function now includes split screen display zoom for stills, and zebra highlighting display in video mode. Full aperture metering during live view for still shooting is supported.
A larger hand grip enables comfortable control for extended shooting, and a secondary "i" button has been added to back panel for faster access to important settings. All this is housed inside a durable magnesium alloy body with extensive weather and dust sealing that ensures the D810A is moisture- and dust-resistant to meet the needs of professionals.
