A versatile choice for both still and video recording, the EOS 77D from Canon offers advanced imaging capabilities in an easy to use design. The 77D features a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor for a sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600 (expandable to ISO 51200) and a fast continuous shooting rate of 6 fps. The sensor's design also facilitates Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which uses phase-detection autofocus to ensure fast, accurate, and smooth performance for both video and stills shooting in live view.
Alternatively, a 45-point all cross-type phase-detect AF system is also featured for shooting stills using the optical pentamirror viewfinder. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority.
The 77D supports Full HD 1080p video recording at up to 60 fps in the MP4 format with IPB compression, or 30 fps in the MOV format with ALL-I compression when making in-camera time-lapse movies. An external microphone jack is incorporated into the body design for greater control over your recorded sound. Movie Electronic IS is also featured to minimise the appearance of camera shake across five axes for smoother, steadier recording when shooting handheld.
The camera also features an HDR Movie mode that can be used to achieve greater highlight and shadow detail when recording in high contrast scenarios. This mode captures two HD frames at different exposures, one normal and one underexposed, in short succession at up to 60 fps and then composites them during playback at 30 fps to create a movie with a longer-appearing dynamic range.
The camera is finished with a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD for easy menu navigation, playback control and live view monitoring, and its vari-angle design makes it easier to work from otherwise difficult high and low angles. A top LCD screen makes it easy to quickly view your shooting settings, and a rear Quick Control dial provides more intuitive navigation of settings. Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC is also available for quick and convenient pairing with a smartphone or tablet for wireless image sharing, and Bluetooth allows image sharing to and remote camera control from a mobile device.
Here the 77D is paired with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM from Canon, a versatile zoom lens optimised for both stills and video. Designed for APS-C format DSLRs, it features a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28.8-216mm to cover wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.
With NANO USM technology, the lens features both a fast, stills-optimised ring-type USM Ultrasonic Motor and a smooth, silent video-optimised STM Stepping Motor. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers faster performance throughout the zoom range. An Image Stabiliser compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting, and a Dynamic IS function works to reduce camera shake when recording video. This lens is also compatible with the optional PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adapter for more natural and silent zooming control when recording video.
Optically it features one Ultra-Low Dispersion element and one precision moulded aspherical element to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and limit spherical aberrations and distortions, for increased clarity and sharpness. The exterior of the lens features a smooth satin finish, metal lens mount, dedicated focus mode and Image Stabiliser switches, and a black ring that clearly separates the zoom and focus rings for intuitive handling.
