The Alpha a6500 from Sony is an APS-C format mirrorless camera well-suited to both photo and video applications. Featuring a 24.2MP Exmor CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor, it is designed to produce superb imagery with an expandable sensitivity range to ISO 51200 for working in low-light conditions, and fast readout speeds for internal 4K30 and Full HD 1080p120 video with full pixel readout.
This combination of sensor and processor enables 4D FOCUS, which uses a 425-point phase-detection system with a 169-area contrast detection system for fast, accurate focusing. High-density Tracking AF provides more efficient and accurate tracking of moving subjects across the image frame. The use of phase-detection points also enables the use of A-mount lenses via the optional LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 lens mount adapters with full AF compatibility. In addition to autofocus, the a6500 also features a Peaking MF function to benefit manual focus control by highlighted sharp edges of contrast for a more objective means of acquiring sharp focus.
The BIONZ X image processor provides another benefit for videographers, with the inclusion of a S&Q (Slow & Quick) Motion setting to capture Full HD video at frame rates from 1-120 fps. It also enables continuous stills shooting at 11 fps for up to 301 JPEGs in burst, as well as 14-bit raw file output.
The inclusion of 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilisation is a further benefit to both stills and video shooters, helping to reduce the appearance of camera shake. This image stabilisation system compensates for five different types of camera shake during handheld shooting of stills and video, and will correct for pitch and yaw adjustments when working with longer focal lengths. All 5 axes of stabilisation will function at all times, even when used with third-party lenses and adapters or lenses with built-in optical stabilisation.
All this is housed inside a robust magnesium alloy body that is dust and moisture-resistant for peace of mind when working in changeable environments. The shutter design is also highly durable, and rated to withstand more than 200,000 cycles. The compact profile incorporates a high-resolution XGA Tru-Finder 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for bright, clear, eye-level viewing, and this EVF features a 120 fps viewing mode for smooth tracking of fast-moving subjects. A rear 3.0" 921.6k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD monitor is also available to benefit working from high and low angles, and the touchscreen design allows for intuitive touch-to-focus control. Tilt upward 90° or 45° downward. Nine customisable buttons can be set to control more than 64 functions for more intuitive handling, and Wi-Fi with NFC is also built-in, allowing you to link your camera with a mobile device for intuitive wireless control, and easy sharing of images online.
The included NP-FW50 rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for 350 shots per charge when working with the viewfinder, or 400 shots per charge with the LCD screen. It can also be powered via a USB connection to a computer or mobile battery, which can also work to charge the battery. The a6500 comes with one NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery, Shoulder Strap, Body Cap, Accessory Shoe Cap, Eyepiece Cup, Micro-USB Cable and AC-UUD12 AC Adapter.
Here the camera is kitted with the E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens, which offers a wide-angle to telephoto 27-202.5mm equivalent focal length range. Benefiting the reach of the lens is an Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system, which minimises the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens uses a linear autofocus motor for fast and accurate focusing performance that is also quiet to suit video recording applications, and an intelligent optical design uses both extra-low dispersion glass and aspherical elements to control spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range.
