This lens, with its constant f/2.8 aperture and versatile zoom range, is an excellent all arounder. The zoom goes from wide to short telephoto, letting you capture everything from wide-open spaces to intimate portraits, while the bright aperture lets in plenty of light for low-light work. Image quality is very high, thanks to the use of UD and aspherical elements, which minimise aberrations and distortion. Autofocus is provided via Canon's ring-type ultrasonic motor, so it is quick, silent, and supports full-time manual override. Finally, the image stabiliser lets you shoot hand held at shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would otherwise be possible.
