Designed for APS-C format DSLRs, the Canon EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is a 56mm-equivalent prime lens that features a unique design with close-up capabilities. The combination of a life size 1:1 maximum magnification and a minimum focusing distance of only 13cm permits this lens to achieve life-size imagery of close-up subjects. To provide additional illumination for close-up subjects, a Macro Lite LED is integrated on the front of the lens. This light can be configured to illuminate either right or left side only, or both sides, and features adjustable brightness for greater visual depth and reducing shadows cast by lens in close proximity to the subject. The incorporation of one aspherical element in the optical design reduces spherical aberrations for high degree of sharpness and clarity, thus aiding the reproduction of smaller subjects at lifesize.

Complementing the optics is a Hybrid IS image stabilisation system that minimises the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery during handheld shooting and in difficult lighting. A lead screw-type STM stepping motor provides for fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance, benefitting both stills and video applications. For making fine-tuned adjustments, a full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) is available to permit instant switch to manual focus control in AF mode. A rounded seven-blade diaphragm and bright f/2.8 maximum aperture contribute to a smooth and pleasing bokeh when employing shallow depth of field techniques.
