Photographer of the Month: Fiona Andersen
Wedding and portrait photographer Fiona Andersen became enraptured
with photography the moment she held her first camera as a young
child.
She has since developed her passion into a well-honed skill,
creating stunning wedding, portrait, maternity and newborn images
that encapsulate feelings of romance, beauty and timelessness.
While juggling a hectic family life with her professional
schedule poses challenges, Fiona says the reward is worth it.
How long have you been a photographer for?
Oh, goodness, for as long as I can remember. I first picked
up a camera when I was five-years-old. It was one of
those rectangular models, and I thought it was super cool but had
no idea how to work it. It wasn't until six years later when my
parents decided I was old enough for my own bright red Kodak. I am
sure they regretted it as it was my dad who had to pay for all the
developing!! I have been doing photography professionally for two
years.
What attracted you to photography?
I was attracted to photography by my inability to draw. I
would have loved to have been able to create magic with pencils or
paint, however, stick figures were the extend of my talent. Having
a camera in hand has given me the ability to look at the world as
an artist and to be able to capture what I see as an
artist.
How would you describe your style as a
photographer?
I think I would call my style romantic, editorial.
What is your favourite gear setup and why?
I love to shoot portraits so I adore my 85 1.2 lens. When shooting a wedding I
reach for my 24 -70mm for story
telling and then the 50mm 1.2. I am still hanging on (by a
thread) to my 5D MkI however I know a day will come soon when I
will have to let go and move to the 5D MkII... or maybe the 1DS... Hey, a girl can dream!

What has been or is your greatest challenge as a
photographer?
My greatest challenge as a photographer has been the balance
between my professional career and my family career. Being the
mother of three small girls is an amazing job, but combing the two
can be overwhelming for, not only myself, but for my family. Making
sure I remember to smell the flowers as well as the toes of my
little people is really important.
What do you find most gratifying about being a
photographer?
EVERYTHING. I adore what I do. I adore the relationships I
form with my clients. I adore creating and capturing moments and I
especially adore making people feel happy.
