Photographer of the Month: Darryl Carey
How long have you
been a photographer for?
My first camera was given to me by my father just before he
passed away almost 20 years ago. Since then, my photography
skills have travelled from taking photos of nature and scenery to
people and commercial products.
What attracted you to photography?
In 1989, I remembered seeing an amazing photograph of Mark
Allen/Dave Scott from the Hawaii Ironman 1989 (Iron-War). From
this photograph, I felt that I was actually there experiencing this
achievement made by these athletes.
What is your speciality?
I love taking photos of anyone and anything but my real
passion is sport photography, thanks to my background in
competitive cycling. My work has been published in reputable
international magazines as well as by commercial brands.
How would you describe your style?
I have an excellent imagination and cannot sum up an individual
style or technique. I like to explore different styles and come up
with new and innovative ways of taking the 'winning shot'.
What is your favourite combination of gear?
I'm a huge Nikon fan. My favourite combination has to be a
Nikon D3 with a
300mm f2.8 VR on
the front. Another favourite item is my Think Tank bags and
belt systems.

What is/has been your greatest challenge as a
photographer?
Being 50% photographer and 50% businessman. This is a changing
world and you have to learn when to put the camera down and
become a businessman.
What do you find most gratifying about being a pro
photographer?
I find producing the 'winning shot' and seeing it published in
advertisements, posters, magazines etc most gratifying, as I can
say that I am able to bring the viewers to experience what went on
in the photograph, just like what I experienced in 1989.
What tips or advice do you have for budding
photographers?
My tip for young photographers is 'follow your dream and you
will get there'. Set short and long term goals on what you would
like to achieve every year and work towards them.
